Red Alert (NYPD Red #5) Reviews
Red Alert is the 5th in the NYPD Red Series by James Patterson and Marshall Karp.
The dynamic duo of Detectives Zach Jordan and Kylie MacDonald team up to be the crime fighters for the elite in New York. They protect and serve the “red-carpet” types – the rich and famous. Zach and Kylie used to have a “thing”, but that is in the past and they are learning to work together again. Okay, let me re-phrase this. Kylie is now married, and Zach is dating. However, Kylie doesn’t really ...more
A really solid crime novel with interesting plots and believable characters. I like how each new book in the series reveals a little more about Zach and Kylie’s relationship. Such a quick read though, maybe 4 hours at the most, I would like another twist or more detail to make it more substantial!
3.5/5. I think NYPD Red is one of Patterson's better series. I liked how this one took us internationally to Thailand.
4.5 stars, actually
I've gone on record at least two other times with the opinion that this may be the best of the many series by James Patterson and his co-author du jour (in this case, Marshall Karp). And nothing in this one made me change my mind. It moves along quickly, serves up a few surprises all the way to the end and enough humor to hold my attention throughout.

A few years ago, I really enjoyed reading James Patterson’s novels, especially the Women’s Murder Club series. Then after 10 or so books, they got a bit repetitive and I mostly stopped reading them. The first NYPD Red came out in 2012 and I loved the concept. A detective series based on the crimes that happened to New York’s rich and famous elite. Now that’s it the fifth novel, I’m getting a bit tired of the series, but it was a perfect pool sid ...more
Not bad ... 3.5 stars.
James Patterson’s NYPD Red series is another favourite of mine and is something different given that it focuses on police officers who are tasked with protecting New York’s elite. It’s hard to believe that this is the fifth book in the series already. It was an enjoyable read and without doubt one of my favourites in the series so far. I love Zach and Kylie and felt that the storyline here was one of the best out of the five books.
As is usually the case with a James Patterson novel, there’s mul ...more
3.5 stars - dropped a star for my complaint below.
Read as an audio book.
I enjoyed this latest installment with one significant issue, and I would even go as far to say this is a major complaint:
Mr. Patterson, DO move on from the whole ex-girlfriend/current girlfriend angst. It's stupid on so many levels. Zack got a gorgeous (all the women are in the Patterson books) and caring girlfriend and all he does is compare the fine Dr. to his partner and ex-girlfriend from 10 years ago, and whine about ...more
